Back in 1954, on NW 17th Ave and 70th St., The Liberty City Pool hosted a concert by the world famous Lionel Hampton. Here’s how Henry Stone was involved: Henry Stone was always a jazz fan. He grew up on this great music and even played professional trumpet for years growing up. He also distributed jazz labels all over Florida. Lionel Hampton was known as the “King Of The Vibraphone.” He was fresh off a European tour that broke attendance records. Miami promoter Bill Rivers presented this concert with an admission cost of $2.25 advance, or $2.50 on the day of the show. Hampton was traveling with his “World’s Greatest Entertaining and Dance Band,” and tickets could be bought at Shaddie’s Tavern, The Rockland Palace, the Liberty City Pool, North Travel Agency, and Economy Drug Store.
