The critically-acclaimed new Netflix show “Orange is the New Black” features a classic track by the multi-million selling gold-record artist Latimore. “Move and Groove Together”, from the world-renowned Southern Soul crooner, is used as part of the premiere episode.

The track comes in at 14:30 in the first episode, titled “I Wasn’t Ready”, in a very sultry scene with the main character, Piper Chapman, played by Taylor Schilling, dancing for her lesbian lover, Alex Vause, played by Laura Prepon. Netflix has recently received fourteen Emmy nominations for their original programming.

The track “Move and Groove Together”, available on the Benny Latimore The Early Years CD, has quickly jumped up the sales charts. It was originally recorded in 1968 at Bobby Dukoff’s studio and was written and sung by Latimore. It came out on Dade Records as a 45. This is a representation of the true Miami Sound, long before any of those other came out in the 80s.

Born in Charleston, TN in 1939, Benny Latimore was influenced by country music, his Baptist church choir, and the Blues. WLAC, via the strong evening signal from Nashville, was a favorite in Latimore’s youth.

Benny Latimore, who was produced by Steve Alaimo, describes “The Miami Sound” as a kind of combination of R&B and Jazz.

In a career spanning over 35 years and beginning with recordings in the 1960s for Miami music legend Henry Stone, the gems on this CD were cut on the Dade label long before Benny’s success on the Glades/T.K. label. These early recordings for Dade are solid deep soul, graced by Latimore’s deep, sultry voice.

Included on this disc are the much sought after 1965 hits, “I Can’t Go On Anymore” and “Rain From the Sky”, originally recorded on Stone’s Blade label. These are treasures that until now only a few collectors were lucky enough to have. Today we bring them to you for the world to hear.

“Sensational” really is the best word to describe Latimore. He proved to be extremely adept as both a superlative vocalist and keyboard player par excellence. Benny Latimore is Florida’s master soul stylist.

Steve Alaimo is what I call a “Musical Triple-Threat” man. Yes, this versatile, multi-talented youngster holds his audience whether he’s singing, playing an instrument, or dancing the latest steps. Patrons of Harry’s American Bar in Miami’s famed Eden Roc Hotel never know what to expect when Steve steps on the stage. Sometimes he will spend most of his time alternativing with guitar, harmonica, and organ. Other times he’ll be in a “wailing” groove that builds and builds with each song he sings. On other sets he works out new dance steps with his partners… right in front of his appreciative audience. “Exciting” is the word most used to describe Steve’s antics, whether visual or audio.

In this second album by Steve, he introduces you to “The Mashed Potatoes,” the newest dance sensation to sweep the country. Actually, Steve has been mashin’ those potatoes for almost three years. But, like the Twist, it took the second time around for Mashed Potatoes to gain a national acceptance among both teenagers and adults. At this point it looks as though Mashed Potatoes will be the dance of ’62, just as the Twist was the sensation of ’61.

No on has done more than Steve Alaimo to promote the Mashed Potatoes as a dance. Steve, along with countless others, now have seen their efforts pay off. So… let yourself go! Just set this record on the turntable, flip the switch, (and let the non-dancers step back), and get set to do the Mashed Potatoes!

Steve Alaimo, a 21 year old newcomer to that mysterious inner-circle which surrounds teenage record idols, well deserves to be included. Although he has been recording only a short time, he has amassed a large, enthusiastic following; due not only to his records, but to his personal appearances at such places as the famous Eden Roc Hotel in Miami Beach. Perhaps Steve’s devoted following stems as much from appearances as recordings, for he is a very personable, handsomee young man… quite enough to make any young girl’s heart beat a little faster! And he has something else that few of today’s young singers seem to possess – a voice!

The first album by Steve Alaimo is especially for Twist enthusiasts. But even if you’re an advocate of the Twist, we’re sure you’ll enjoy just listening.

Long before the British Invasion, there was a lot of blue-eyed soul music in the U. S. in places that never got mass exposure. Steve Alaimo was one of the first to explore this genre. His backing musicians included members of the James Brown band and other R&B band legends. He also had some of Nashville’s best songwriters providing material for him to record. He hosted a TV show called “Where The Action Is!” Alaimo recorded a lot of great tunes. He has personally chosen his favorite recordings for this compilation. Anyone who enjoys the 50s and 60s oldies will love these tracks!

Mercy is made up of Jack Sigler, Jr. (guitar and vocals), Brenda McNish (piano and vocals), Debbie Lewis (organ and vocals), Jamie Marvell (12 string rhythm guitar and vocals), Buddy Goods (bass guitar and vocals), Rodger Fuentes (drums), and Ronnie Caudill (lead guitar).

Jack Sigler, Jr., who is from Tampa, Florida, decided to form his own group, so Mercy was born and the rebels from Brandon High start gigging at local dances, making good sounds.

A producer from Hollywood, a friend of Jack Sigler’s dad, heard the group and decided to use Jack Sigler, Jr.’s original song called “Love Can Make You Happy” for the film “Fireball Jungle.” A couple of silver-eared DJs from Miami picked up on the band and, as they say, the rest is history.

Produced by Brad Shapiro and Steve Alaimo and Supervised by Henry Stone. Arranged by The Zoo, vocal arrangements by Jack Sigler, Jr., engineer Ronnie Albert.

After years of making 45 singles, this album represents the first full-length release for J. P. Robinson. He started recording for Henry Stone on the Alston label in the late 60s. J.P. “Pooleroo” Robinson, out of West Palm Beach, was discovered by Joe Fisher, a well-known radio disc jockey from WRBD in Ft. Lauderdale. Robinson was introduced to Henry Stone, who gave the okay for Clarence Reid and Willie Clarke to write and produce his songs, which they did with a flamboyant, energetic sound.

According to Willie Clarke, “J. P. seemed to go berserk at the microphone. He was so caught up in the feel of his songs, at times we thought we would have to hit him with a bat to calm him down. He was electric!” When he was going to do a recording session, people would try to get in on it to watch him work. His sessions were like watching a show.

Willie got the idea to write “Hot Love”, in which you can easily hear Robinson’s energy in the lyrics. Robinson was an instant sensation with the release of the hit 45 single, “I Got My Thing On A String.”
