In the 1960’s and early 1970’s Henry Stone started to record a some local Miami talent. Stone was strongly influenced musically by his association with James Brown and you can hear this influence in the artists who make up this Miami Funk CD.

Mr. Percolator aka Perk Badger, I Got A Thing For You Baby
It is easy to hear that James Brown was Percolator’s inspiration and primary motivator. Perk Badger was a businessman who owned several record shops in Miami and would buy his records from Henry Stone’s Tone Distributors. Badger was very popular on the club scene and the ladies loved him. He was indeed the “Percolator.”

The Mighty Dog Catchers, Nasty Dog
This was the weirdest band I have ever had the pleasure to know and produce. They were a one-take band; the recording was done and hot to go. Their style of music was comic-relief during the turbulent days of the late 60’s and 70’s. They were a product of Deep City Records in Liberty City which was owned by two schoolteachers, Willie Clarke and Johnny Persall. Band members included Charlie Smith on guitar, Reed Roberts on bass, Vernon “Piggy” Teague on saxophone, Clifford Hawkins on drums, and King Edwards on keyboards.

Franky Seay, Soul Food
Seay is a unique example of what Miami Beach was about in the 60’s and 70’s. The bands were loose and funky and had a certain sound that made them different. Seay was a talented guitarist and well liked. His loose, carefree rhythm was a unique mixture of island and big city feel.

The Mighty Dogcatchers, It’s Gonna Be A Mess
This recording is a part two version of Nasty Dog. It was the first and maybe the only recording on the Green Gold label owned by Willie Clarke. The group was a very talented and funny band; they will make you laugh out loud.

Funky Nassau, Look What You Can Get
This band consisted of four members, Arnold “Hoss” Albury on keyboard, Ivan “Cool Breeze” Orlando on drums, Charles “Carlos” Hepburn on bass and lead vocals, and Simeon Taylor on guitar. The Horns of many Deep City and T.K. Records in the early days came from the famous Marching 100 of FAMU, consisting of Aaron Johnson and Willie North on trombone and Earl Bethel and Earl Finley on trumpet. Ivan Orlando played on two gold hits, Clean Up Woman with Betty Wright and Rockin Chair with Gwen McCrea. Check out the unique grooves on these classics. This group played on the original Blowfly x-rated albums. They were also, with the exception of The Horns, Betty Wright’s tour band. They were very exciting and entertaining in their colorful tapestry/designer uniforms. With Hoss on the organ B3, they sounded like a 10 piece band. This group set the pace as the foundation of the T. K. era and Miami Funk. They were so hot that they had to have three names to make way for releases, Funky Nassau, The Rising Sun, and Arnold Albury And The Casuals.

James Knight And The Butlers, Funky Cat
When Hoss Albury’s band was on other missions, James Knight And The Butlers was the group to call. This band was the number one Miami and Miami Beach band of the funk era. With his unique lead vocal and versatile guitar licks, James Knight was the king. He could play anything. With his blend of Bahamian and Miamian culture, he was known to rock the studio when he recorded. This was the band to beat when it came down to the competition. Blowfly aka Clarence Reid used them for most of his albums in the early days. Produced, co-written, and engineered by yours truly (Willie Clarke), James Knight And The Butlers made my job easy and enjoyable. This talented young group consisted of James Knight on lead vocals and guitar. Robert “Blind” Jackson was known at that time to be the best drummer of all the bands. Napoleon Reed was on bass; he played with everybody. Just show him the gig and he knew everybody’s music and style. Keyboards were handled by Arnold “Hoss” Albury who could and did play with every band in town. Ernest “Snuff” Stewart played with James Brown for a while. The Horns consisted of Dwight Jones on saxophone and Tim Brown on brass. Ernest Bethune went from being drum major at Miami Northwestern to drum major at FAMU, home of the Marching 100 plus in the mid-sixties.

Johnny K, I’m Afraid Of The Dark
He was a natural for singing the funny songs written by Clarence Reid and Willie Clark, with a naturally comic-sounding style. His moves in the studio and onstage made him a big hit from his hometown of Tampa and everywhere he appeared with his band. If you need to laugh, listen to Johnny K, he will brighten your day. His first release was on the Deep City label.

Oceanliners, Cutting Room (Hot Pants)
The band consisted of Jerome Smith on guitar, Robert Johnson aka Shotgun on drums, and Anthony Turner on bass. The horns were led by Jerome’s brother, Ronald Smith, who played trumpet. This band was Betty Wright’s first show band. They were the youngest of all the artists I produced. They played on countless hits for T. K. and eventually became The Sunshine Band of KC and The Sunshine Band fame. This group helped shape the fabulous era of disco worldwide. The youngest band member, Anthony Turner, was replaced by Rick Finch, who surprised everyone with his skills on bass.

The Believers, Across The Tracks
The Believers were a hip group that will enhance this Miami Funk CD with their truly funky groove, fuel, and sound.

Willie Johnson, Lay It On Me
Brought to T. K. by David Smith out of Tampa, Willie Johnson, a native of Atlanta, was just what David said, a fantastic, soulful R & B singer with personality and good looks. In other words, he could do the job and sell records. Willie Johnson’s only obstacle was that he was not living in Miami, to be closer to his writers and producers, Clarence Reid and Willie Clarke. His music has become a favorite among collectors around the world.

Oceanliners featuring Willie Clarke, It’s All Right
This song brought the freak out in me. I took my feel and my limited passion and gave my rendition of a funky rapp instrumental. I don’t want to elaborate on this, just get into the sensual sound of Willie “Bossdog” Clarke and the Oceanliners because “It’s All Right”.

King Tutt, Hey Sexy
King Tutt, with a jazzy funky style out of Montgomery, was introduced to T. K. Productions via Joyce Straws, head of promotions and studio manager. This song had a well groomed and rehearsed sound that stood out from the Miami based T. K. bands, which had a raw and let-it-go style. Most bands had whites, latinos, and blacks. King Tutt was black all the way and had great vocals to go along with it.

Wizdom, At The Disco Dance
My best friend, the late, great Anthony “Tony” Ward, lead guitarist on Wizdom, also played lead guitar on Anita Ward’s Ring My Bell. I remember Tony as highly hyper and he would dance constantly while onstage. Tony’s band featured Walt Harris on lead vocals and drums.

The Original Cousins, Sock It
This is, by far, the earliest sound of Miami. Originating from Overtown out of the Fiesta Club, 1959-61, this was one of Deep City’s first releases headed by Lorenzo “Billy” Jackson. This band is a perfect example of the history of the funky Miami sound. Lorenzo was one of the top saxophone players in the country and played mostly on Miami Beach during the Deco era. Return with us now to the golden days of yesteryear and the funky sound of Sock It.

After listening to volume one of this great Miami funk CD, keep your ears open for the forthcoming Miami Funk series.

> Freddie and The Kinfolk – Mashed Potato Popcorn
Freddie Scott led a group called The Kinfolk which released three singles on the Dade Label in 1968-69. Scott’s superb drumming kept him in constant demand. He backed countless soul bands. In 1974, he became the drummer for the R&B/Funk band Miami.

> The Blowflys – Funky In The Hole
The Blowflys were a group that was put together by the singers, songwriters, and producers Clarence Reid and Willie Clarke. Studio background singers and musicians made up this group.

> Freddie Scott – Same Old Beat
Scott was born in Jacksonville January 15th, 1939. At age 9, he began taking drum lessons. In 1958, Miami soul singer Davey “Dizzy” Jones brought Scott to Miami and introduced him to famed Miami record promoter and producer Henry Stone. In 1965, Scott was signed to Stone’s nationally distributed Dade and Scott labels and he recorded the single “Same Old Beat”

> B. B. Brown – I Weep
B. B. Brown came down from Ft. Lauderdale to the Miami studios. While crying in his beer he cut “I Weep.”

> Funky Nassau – Bahama Soul Stew
This group consisted of Arnold Albury on keyboards, Ivan Orlando playing drums, Charles Hepburn on lead vocals and bass guitar, and Simeon Taylor on guitar. They were famous for their colorful costumes made of tapestry that reflected their Bahamian style.

> Mona Lisa – They Don’t Know
Mona Lisa, in the mid-60s, came into my studio from Fort Lauderdale. We cut a few sides and later released them, but in the 60s they were just a little too funky. However, this track is perfect for the Miami Funk CD.

> Miami – Notorious
One of the earliest Florida dance acts to ride the first wave of the Miami sound was a soul/funk/dance band called “Miami”. On the Drive label, the group Miami, consisted of Robert Moore singing lead vocals, Warren “Roach” Thompson on guitar, Andrew “Wolf” Curran on guitar, Willie Jackson playing bass guitar, James Allen Johnson on bass, Bobby Williams on keyboard, Freddie Scott on the drums, and Jesus Gonzales beating the Congas. The group was produced by Willie Clarke and Clarence Reid.

> Little Beaver – Funkadelic Sound
On the Cat label, real name Willie George Hale, teamed up with Willie Clarke and together they wrote countless songs for T.K. artists. Beaver’s legendary bass and twelve string guitar riffs helped catapult Betty Wright’s Clean Up Woman to gold record status. This song, “Funkadelic Sound,” with Little Beaver, was Jaco Pastorious’ first ever recording session and it was engineered by Willie Clarke.

> Famous Chromes – Groove On
The Famous Chromes were out of Ft. Lauderdale and were discovered by Joe Fisher, the world-famous radio disc jockey also out of Ft. Lauderdale.

> Sam Early – Never Loved A Woman
Sam Early was born in Savannah, Georgia on April 4, 1935. He performed at the Cotton Club on Miami Beach in 1958 and soon after made Miami his home. He performed with The Cab Calloway Review and began working as a singer/songwriter for Davey “Dizzy” Jones who brought Early’s talents to the attention of famed Miami record producer Henry Stone where he recorded on Stone’s Marlin and Dade labels. In 1970 he recorded “Never Loved A Woman” on Stone’s Cat label.

> Johnny K – Screwdriver
He hails from Tampa, Florida. This song is a follow-up to his “I’m Afraid Of The Dark” on the Miami Funk Vol. 1 CD. Screwdriver is also penned by Clarence Reid and Willie Clarke, famed Miami songwriters and producers.

> The Hot Stuffs – Mr. Hot Stuff
Written by Miami’s Clarence Reid and Willie Clarke, this was a little studio group that was put together and called Hot Stuff. It was cut in Stone’s old Miami studio.

> The Funky Bunch – Miami Funk
Miami Funk, picked from the Henry Stone archives, sets a great funky groove. The Funky Bunch consisted of Clarence Reid, Willie Clarke, “Chocolate” Perry and other studio musicians.

VIDEO – “Cramp Your Style” by All The People

All The People ~ This is one of the best tracks from Robert “Miami” Moore. Cramp Your Style is a great funk track with a sound that hits you right from the start.

Clarence Reid ~ During the 60s and 70s, Clarence Reid, singer, songwriter, talent scout, and producer for Henry Stone’s labels, was involved in just about every recording that came out of Stone’s Hialeah-based Upstairs studio. Masterpiece is a heartfelt and poignant performance in which Reid brings a rich, vocal quality.

James Knight and the Butlers ~ James Knight is also called The Black Knight. He leads a tight combo with a raw, funky sound. You can hear Knight’s guitar leading the combo with great horns backing him up.

James Brown ~ James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, called Henry Stone his Godfather. Stone and Brown have been close friends since the beginning of Please, Please, Please. They formed the BrownStone record label and put out several releases over the years, including this great funky track, Funk On Ahh Roll.

Leno Phillips ~ Excellent funk from the Miami scene of the 70s, I Like My Birdie has a powerful, fast groove that you can feel right from the start.

Milton Wright ~ Milton Wright’s rare groove Keep It Up is one of the most unique soul songs of its generation. A grooving track with just a hint of funk and a deeply smooth vocal and some original rhythms that really make it special.

Stony Island Band ~ They took their name from the southside Chicago neighborhood that they grew up in. This track, that they named after the band, is late 70s funky soul with a male lead vocal, call-and-response chorus and a heavy rhythm lead by the guitars.

The Beginning of the End ~ This group from the Bahamas took the best part of the island rhythms and used them to create a whole new style of funk, with a bouncy sound that comes from some incredible guitar, bass and drums.

Vanessa Kendrick ~ The original version of this hot Gwen McCrae track, 90% Of Me Is You, the music is similar, heavy beats and lush strings, but the vocal is very different, smooth and sultry, almost ballad-like. If you are a fan of the cover, check out this original.

Wizdom ~ The late, great Anthony “Tony” Ward, lead guitarist on Wizdom, also played lead guitar on Anita Ward’s Ring My Bell. Tony was highly hyper and he would dance constantly while onstage. Tony’s band featured Walt Harris on lead vocals and drums. A great rare sweet, funky soul gem.

Fats Gallon ~ Fats Gallon, the son of well-known radio DJ “Wildman Steve”, has been on the road as a drummer, writer, arranger, and producer since he was 17. He has played for legendary groups such as Latimore, The Dells, Sly Stone, Betty Wright and many more. His solo tracks combine great energy with a wildly funky beat.

Chocolateclay ~Great Miami style Funk from the collaboration of George “Chocolate” Perry and Clay Cropper.

The Believers ~ The Believers were originally James Brown’s backing band, the JB’s. When King Records decided they only wanted to release tracks by James Brown, not his band, Brown teamed with Floridian music mogul Henry Stone to create the BrownStone Label. Additional tracks were released on the label by Bobby Byrd, Vicki Anderson and others, but this track is the hardest and rarest.

Charles Johnson ~ This Alston track, Baby I Cried Cried Cried, the rarest 45 by Charles Johnson, is one of the best soul singles of the 70s.

Clarence Reid ~ Clarence Reid, singer, songwriter, talent scout, and producer for Henry Stone’s labels, was involved in just about every recording that came out of Stone’s Hialeah-based Upstairs studio. This is one of the funkiest grooves ever from Reid, a hard and heavy number.

George & Gwen McCrae ~ McCrae formed his own singing group, the Jivin’ Jets, before joining the U.S. Navy in 1963. Four years later, he reformed the group, with his wife Gwen joining the line-up, but soon afterwards they decided to work as a duo. George & Gwen were discovered in 1967 by singer Betty Wright, who helped get them signed to Stone’s Alston record label.

Gwen McCrae ~ Gwen McCrae, best known for her 1975 hit Rockin’ Chair, hails originally from Pensacola, Florida. After recording with her husband George, Gwen then won a solo contract for Henry Stone’s Alston label. George also went on to fame singing Rock Your Baby.

Jerry Washington ~ Jerry Washington’s 70s boogie club soul tune Don’t Waste My Time, originally on the Glades label, brings a tight groove and bass to Jerry’s improvised vocals backed by heavy drums.

Milton Wright ~ The brother of soul singer Betty Wright (of Clean-Up Woman fame), Milton has a more jazzy sound than many of his contemporaries. He brings his own acoustic guitar lines to the funky keyboards and rhythms.

Phillip Wright ~ Another brother of Betty Wright, brings this excellent funk from the Miami scene of the 70s, Keep Her Happy is an original number from Wright, with riffing guitar underneath strong horns, and a little bit of spicy keyboards on the breakdown with warmvocals over a classic funky groove.

Arnold Albury & The Casuals ~ Born 1940, Arnold “Hoss” Albury played keyboards and was an organist for the world-famous Marching 100 Band out of Miami. Arnold was a founding member of the group The Rising Sun, and recorded on three Dade 45s.

Wizdom ~ A great rare soul track with a sweet and soulful groove from the 1980s. Wizdom featured Anthony “Tony” Ward as the energetic lead guitarist and Walt Harris on lead vocals and drums.

Fats Gallon ~ Gallon played drums for legendary top entertainers such The Dell’s, Manhattan’s, Sly Stone, ChiLites, Latimore, Regina Bell, Betty Wright, and Millie Jackson. Amazing is the best adjective to qualify these tracks; soul, funk, p-funk and psyche are mixed and the mood is quite crazy.

Chocolateclay ~Great Miami style Funk from the collaboration of George “Chocolate” Perry and Clay Cropper.

BONUS Gwen McCrae ~ These two bonus tracks are fantastic renditions of these popular Stevie Wonder songs, You Are The Sunshine of My Life and Signed, Sealed, Delivered with Gwen’s signature sultry vocals.

Anyone who has followed the course of modern music, even on a casual basis, is aware of the vast influence that the guitar has played. From the beginning, it has set the pace for new musical trends.

In this “age of the guitar” we have discovered yet another impressario of this art form; one who has traveled the same roads that gave us the likes of B.B. King and Wes Montgomery. His names is Willie (Little Beaver) Hale.

Born in Arkansas, Beaver made his way to Miami, Florida. He was brought to us one day by Willie Clark to maybe do some session work and ended up doing all of the guitar parts to Betty Wright’s “Clean Up Woman”, Willie Clarke then produced Beaver on his first hit single, “Joey”.

Al Kooper (of Blood, Sweat, & Tears fame) was so excited about Little Beaver after using him on some sessions, he asked if we would send him some of Beaver’s first album (Cat 1601) so Kooper could turn his friends on to Little Beaver.

Beaver has long been a highly regarded songwriter, as numerous successes on the charts have already indicated, but in this album we are trying to bring you another side of the multi-talented individual, Little Beaver.

As you’ll hear in this instrumental album, Beaver’s unique style and approach to both writing and playing reflect deep feelings and emotions with a rare simplicity that will make you a Little Beaver fan forever.

Originally produced and engineerd by Richard Finch. Henry Stone and Steve Alaimo were the original executive producers at Henry Stone’s Hialeah studios.

Hello, I’m Willie Clarke, songwriter, producer, and recording engineer of the T. K. Production Era. The home of KC and the Sunshine Band “That’s The Way I Like It”, Betty Wright “Clean Up Woman”, Gwen McCrae “Rockin Chair”, George McCrae “Rock Your Baby”, and countless others who are big stars of the unique Miami Sound thanks to the leadership of Henry Stone. It gives me a great deal of pride and pleasure to present one of T.K.’s superstars, David Hudson, one of the most talented artists that I have ever produced.

From the soul and funk of Miami via Atlanta, David was introduced to me by Fred Thomas, a Hialeah police officer. He auditioned with the Jeff Band, which included Tyrone Williams and Julio Ferrer, prominent T.K. studio musicians.

Songwriter Earl King brought me a song entitled “Honey, Honey”. We cut it with David and the Jeff Band and it became one of T.K.’s biggest hits. It was number one on WQBA, the record of the year. Can you imagine: a Cuban radio station? It became a bigger hit on Country radio and super R&B. It was a number one hit in Miami. The Musicians were White, Black, Cuban, etc. That’s Miami Funk!

David Hudson came at a time when the dance era was in decline, so his career was short-circuited. Now he’s back via the Treehouse, a club frequented by real people of Soul, Funk, Pop, Blues, and Jazz. It is a club three minutes from the old T.K. studios. Stars such as Aretha Franklin, Isaac Hayes, Wilson Pickett, and James Brown frequented this indoor/outdoor Soul food restaurant/club. Known not only for its Soul music, but also for its Soul food, they served the best souse, fried fish, fried chicken, and pork chops and this was the place to be if you were in the T.K. neighborhood. This is the house of David when he’s in Miami.

His songs reflect the real people of Miami in soul and funk. This is David’s first full-length album on CD. This newest production has been a hard adventure. It includes T.K. producers and musicians: George “Chocolate” Perry, bass player for Crosby, Stills, and Nash, the Bee Gees, Bobby Caldwell, and others. Ron Bogdon, a bass player out of Boston, also plays on it. Love you Ron.

David is ready for the future. Just dig on these: “Pump It” (Electric), “Unchained Melody” (Miami Reggae), “Let Me Wrap You In My Love” (Country Funk), “Someone Loves You Honey” (Real Soul R&B). David has what you want. Check it out. The soul of Miami, USA. And remember, “Someone Loves You Honey”.

‘Nuff Said!
